The College of Physical Science and Technology consists of theDepartment of Physics, theDepartment of Astronomy, and one university-level research institutes:The Research Institute of Soft Matter and Biomimetics. It also accommodates the Engineering Research Center for Micro/Nano Optoelectronic Materials and Devices of Ministry of Education and Flexible Material Research and Application of Innovative Intelligence Platform of Ministry of Education, 7 provincial level platforms: Innovation Center of Semiconductor Optoelectronic Material and its High Efficiency Conversion Device; Key Laboratory of Plasma and Magnetic Resonance; Key Laboratory of Semiconductor Materials and Applications; Key Laboratory of Flexible Functional Materials; Semiconductor Lighting and Display Industry Technology Development Base; Key Laboratory of Electromagnetic Wave Science and Technology, one municipal level platform - Engineering Technology Research Center of Optoelectronic Information Materials and Devices, and 4 university-level platforms: Institute of Theoretical Physics and Astrophysics; Institute of Technical Physics; Semiconductor Photonics Research Center; China-Australia Joint Laboratory for Functional Nanomaterials.

The school hosts 1 national key subject (condensed matter physics), and offers 2 post-doctoral programs, 2 doctoral programs, 12 master programs, and 4 bachelor programs, including a state-level characteristic program (physics). The Electronic Information Science and Technology program has been selected as part of Ministry of Education’s outstanding engineer scheme, and the Microelectronic Science and Engineering program is a province-level characteristic program.

The school comprises 184 full-time staff members, among which 114 are teachers, including 85 holding titles of senior professionals, 93 with doctoral degrees (accounting for 90% of all teachers). Besides, there are 57 engineering and technical staff members, including 14 with associate senior professional titles.

In the past nine decades, upholding principles of conducting solid work and striving for excellence, the school has steadfastly aimed at goals of cultivating capable and creative world-class scholars. Currently, the School boasts 1 academician of U. S. Academy of Engineering and Chinese Academy of Sciences, 5 China National Science Foundation Distinguished Youth Scholars, 8 Ministry of Education new-century awardees and 11 Minjiang Scholars.

During recent four years, the school has actively recruited renowned scholars, developed advanced education and research platforms, helped promote the economy in local areas, and built leading-roled groups in areas of physics, electronic science, and astrophysics. Since 2011, the school’s research funding has reached 120 million RMB. The number of SCI, EI, ISTP papers increases rapidly year by year and the quality also improved. Since 2011, more than 1000 papers published by the School has been filed by SCI, EI, and ISTP, and 120 of them has been categorized in JCR Q1. Among then, three papers inNatureseries (the coauthored paper published inNaturewas chosen as one of 10 main scientific breakthroughs in China in 2015) were published by groups in softmatters, grapheme and astrophysics. And, the study of mimicking Faraday rotation to sort orbital angular momentum of light was selected as one of the China’s Most Prominent Breakthroughs in Optics in 2014. The School has also acquired more than 110 national patents (71 invention patents) and 8 governmental technical awards.

The School has established a thorough talent cultivating system from bachelor, master to doctor. At present, there are more than 1000 full-time students in School. To create a healthy academic atmosphere, the School holds academic seminars and academic competitions from time to time. In 2016, the School won the first prize award in Chinese College Students Physics Competition.

The School constantly improves career planning and development center for students. In 2015, the employment rate for graduates was 97.1% and 95.1% for undergraduates. 29% of undergraduates received further education in China and 16.1% overseas.

The School attracts a great number of distinguished alumni, including members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, industry leaders, educationists, and renowned scientists.
